COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COUPLES PSYCHOLOGY OF MONEY RETREAT

Is it a sales pitch to buy something like insurance or stocks?

No! It's a weekend filled with exercises and skills to help you enjoy your financial future as a couple. Neither leader sells any financial product other than the service of helping you help yourself. We don't tell you how to spend your money. We help you evaluate your own financial relationship. Often couples come to one Couples Assessment before coming to this weekend. This helps them to get the most from this weekend, and to focus the work of the weekend. Often couples follow-up on the weekend with more intense clinical work. However, the weekend itself is a class about taking charge of your financial future as a couple that is fun and educational.

Is it only for couples with problems?

Certainly not. Prevention is the best medicine. We can help you prevent trouble before it begins. Research indicates that the quicker we can help you identify your own areas of strengths and weaknesses as a couple, the greater the likelihood you can prevent unhappiness and potential divorce. Our goal is to help you get the most out of your relationship without suffering unneeded emotional hardship. It is normal to have conflict about money. Money is the hardest area for most couples to deal with because we all work hard for our money and have very strong feelings about how to save or spend it. It is very hard to share this area with another person. Over time, the danger is that resentment builds over how a partner spends or saves money. Unless the couple can work through these issues, they just get harder and harder to solver over time. To prevent this sad situation, we teach you how to think about money with your partner. What really matters is building the foundation skills to give you the language and enthusiasm to handle these difficulties as they arise. Then you can re-balance your relationship yourself, and you may not need further professional help.

Is it appropriate for couples with problems?

Absolutely! A little learning can go a long way in resolving issues. Often couples combine clinical work with this retreat, and tell us that they have learned more in one Sunday for 5 hours than in hours of expensive counseling. We are happy to work with your counselor if you have one, to help your counselor help you get the most out of your work with him or her.

Do you suggest a consultation before I enroll? If so, is there a fee?

Yes, in order to determine how best to make this retreat work for you. Our fee is $200 an hour.
